Driving in Northern Cyprus: License, Insurance & Road Rules

    Güncelleme: 18 Eylül 2026 · GalerimPlus Editör

Driving in Northern Cyprus (TRNC) follows the British system: traffic drives on the left side of the road and gives way to the right on roundabouts. Visitors may legally drive on a valid foreign driver's license for up to 90 days. Expats residing permanently or past 90 days must convert their foreign license into a TRNC driving license. Third-party insurance and annual road tax (Seyrüsefer) are strictly mandatory.

Essential Road Rules: Driving on the Left and Roundabouts

Like the UK, Australia, and Malta, Northern Cyprus is one of the few European territories where traffic travels on the left side of the road, and driver seating is on the right. When approaching roundabouts (çember), the fundamental rule is to give priority to traffic already circulating from your right.

Road signage follows international standards in Turkish and English. Speed limits are strictly set in kilometres per hour (km/h): generally 50 km/h in urban areas, 65–80 km/h on main connecting roads, and 100 km/h on dual-carriageway highways.

Foreign Driver's License Validity & The 90-Day Rule

Visitors arriving with a valid national driver's license (from the UK, European Union, USA, Canada, Turkey, etc.) are entitled to drive in the TRNC for up to 90 days from their date of passport entry.

However, once you obtain a student permit, work permit, or residency permit—or exceed 90 cumulative days on the island—you are legally required to obtain a local TRNC Driver's License (KKTC Sürüş Ehliyeti). Driving on a foreign license after establishing residency invalidates your insurance coverage in the event of an accident.

How to Convert a Foreign License to a TRNC Driving License

License conversion is handled by the District Tax and Licensing Offices (Vergi Dairesi / Sürüş Ehliyeti Bölümü). The procedure does not require retaking a practical driving test for citizens of recognized reciprocal countries:

    • Submit your original foreign driving license and official notarized photocopy.
    • Original passport with valid residency or student permit stamps.
    • Proof of local address from the neighbourhood Muhtar.
    • Two passport-sized photographs and standard licensing application form.
    • Payment of state licensing fees (validity options range from 2, 3, 5, to 10 years).

Speed Cameras and Strict Traffic Enforcement

Northern Cyprus features an extensive network of automated fixed speed cameras (sabit hız kameraları) positioned along key highways between Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, and Ercan Airport.

Speed cameras capture vehicle license plates automatically. Fines are calculated based on the percentage exceeded over the limit and are recorded against the vehicle's logbook. Unpaid fines must be settled before annual road tax can be renewed or the vehicle can be sold.

Compulsory Insurance and Annual Road Tax (Seyrüsefer)

Every motor vehicle driven on public roads must maintain continuous Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance (Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası). Full comprehensive insurance (Kasko) is optional but strongly recommended for modern vehicles.

In addition, vehicle owners must pay the annual road tax (Seyrüsefer Harcı) online through the Ministry of Finance portal, which requires having a valid MOT (Araç Muayene) certificate.

    Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

Which side of the road does traffic drive on in Northern Cyprus?

Traffic drives on the left side of the road in Northern Cyprus. Drivers must give way to traffic coming from the right at all roundabouts and intersections unless signposted otherwise.

What is the legal blood alcohol limit in North Cyprus?

The legal blood alcohol limit is 50 mg/100 ml (0.5 promil). Penalties for driving under the influence are severe and include immediate license suspension, substantial fines, and potential court prosecution.

Can I take a North Cyprus registered car across the border to South Cyprus?

TRNC-registered vehicles driven by foreign nationals can generally only cross into South Cyprus if the driver holds an EU passport or appropriate diplomatic accreditation, and only after purchasing separate South Cyprus border insurance at the crossing checkpoint.

How do I check and pay traffic camera fines in Northern Cyprus?

Traffic camera fines can be verified online through the TRNC Police Department (Polis Genel Müdürlüğü) portal by entering your vehicle registration plate and chassis number, and settled via bank payment.
